Holi celebration

Friday, March 13th, 2009

Got up in the morning to see my dog multi coloured which made me realise!! The festival of colors has finally arrived, and having it on a Wednesday was a perfect break.

Whats Holi? It symbolises the triumph of good over evil, and is usually celebrated with gullal (colored powder) and colored water, but some decide to play it rough with rotten eggs, I remember being blessed with one some years back.

Being a holiday most of us celebrated at home. Mohin was kind enough to ask me, Arundhati and her husband Vikram to come over for lunch, barbeque style. When I reached there, Mohin was busy trying to get the coal to burn, quite a few kid around were doing a rain dance (Mohin’s wife Ritika runs a school for pre primary and primary level, and had installed a custom made multi directional shower system in the garden) with colors flying everwhere. Difficult to recognise the kids with their multi colored faces.

I got a whiskey bottle for the celebration and was told there was fresh Urak (Its the first distillation process of Cashew fruit. You might have heard of the more popular Feni which is the output of the 3rd distillation step). Decided to go safer and go for a round of whiskey first.

Arundhati and Vikram soon joined in with a huge bag of goodies… to barbeque. Both Vikram and Mohin managed to get the barbeque to work and it was decided to go for the veggies first which turned out amazing! (its something to cook yourself.. it tastes better!).

Vikram and Mohin were sipping their cool urak (1 part urak, 1 part lemonade drink 1 part soda), and I got tempted to try it. (try it might not be the correct word, had 5 rounds of those in the end).

Vikram soon attacked my clean shirt with a green color saying it does not look good sitting all clean on a holi day. They argued its my fault for not wearing older clothes. I explained them that the stage I am in right now, old clothes dont fit me anymore! Soon we were coloring everyone.

We did talk about clicking some snaps, but soon we forgot all about it. So sorry dont have any snaps, but Nithya promised me to send a snap, so hopefully it will make its way here when I post this tomorrow.

Quite a few different varieties of seafood made their way on the barbeque, with expert Vikram handling all the cooking. The local dogs too outside enjoyed the few bones we threw out for them.

We even made plans to open a restaurant when we retire in 10 years, and its going to be an exclusive “on invite only”, We make and we drink and eat, we are our favourite customers!

Reached home safely and slept the rest of the day, a glorious end to a good holiday.

Nithya has sent me the snaps just in time for the blog. She celebrated holi with her family at home. As you can see lots of colors!
